For Fashion Girlies: The Solar Bag

In case you haven’t noticed, I’m sort of heavily into geometry; I think it’s reflective of an internal quest for balance, and harmony.

Anyway, after years of designing mostly square, rectangular handbags, I was ready to explore a circular shape.

I wanted it to be svelte, decided and intentional. I designed it in mind for the fashion girlies who’d recognise themselves in its unapologetic boldness, yet refined elegance.

I played around with various iterations of the circle before finally splicing it in half and arrive at the semicircle.

I’m tactile and pragmatic so I need to see and feel the pieces; sketches don’t quite cut it for me.

So I spent approximately 68 hours working closely with our trainee artisan David, doing and redoing the design till I was satisfied. I was aware of his frustration with my doggedness, my obsession over tiny, seemingly inconsequential details, my refusal to change my vision, to give up, and it made me know I was on the right path.

In the end, we got there. We wove in a flexible yet stiff arc of a handle, to give me my original circle, et voila, we could all breathe a sigh of relief.

I love this bag; structured yet ultra feminine, big enough for day time use, (think weekend outings) with our signature clever gusseting, it’s also an undeniable statement bag for special occasions.

What colours would you like to see it in for the next collection?
